The reference Medieval is given to the years following the initial Dark Ages after the collapse of the Western Roman Civilisation. In these 500 years, Europe saw the development of the first Universities, the great Schism between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox faith,  200 years of War and thousands of deaths between the Christian Crusaders and Islamism over the Holy Land and the death of half the population after the spread of The Black Death. England, in particular, underwent radical alterations. The country saw the Norman invasion and the victory of William the Conquer in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings; the building of castles; the largest survey ever carried out before the 19th century censuses, the Doomsday Book; the first female Monarch (if only for a few months), whose Son became the first Plantagenet King; the independence and assertion of authority of the British nobility with the signing of the Magna Carta; the 100 year war against France and the rise of the Tudor dynasty, after the notorious War of the Roses. As well, Genghis Khan built one of the largest empires in history, spanning from Turkey to China in only 25 years, before dividing it up between his sons; the Ottoman empire eventually defeats Constantinople, bringing an end to the Byzantium and Roman Empires.
